GREENVILLE, NC- The Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce the recent hiring of Paul Sheehan as the new full-time Assistant Director of Sports Development. With the sports market being the fastest growing segment of the travel and tourism industry, the Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau is increasing its efforts to be competitive as a sports destination in the state and region.
In fiscal year 2017 – 2018, the Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau successfully booked and provided services for a total of 54 sporting events, which generated a total estimated economic impact in Greenville-Pitt County of $14,830,508 million, an increase of 34% from $11,060,015 million in estimated economic impact from sports events in fiscal year 2016 – 2017. This estimated economic impact is generated directly through hotel room nights, food and beverage purchases, and entertainment, as well as other travel, hospitality, and personal expenditures, which in turn then has economic ripple effect throughout the community.
“We are excited to add Paul to our team in the position of Assistant Director of Sports Development,” stated Andrew Schmidt, Executive Director of the Greenville-Pitt County CVB. “Paul will have a strategic role in solidifying Greenville and Pitt County as a preferred sports destination across the Southeastern United States.”
Sheehan graduated from East Carolina University in 2018 with a dual Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Management. As the Assistant Director of Sports Development, Sheehan will be responsible for the fulfillment of sports tournament services, assisting with representing the Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau at sports trade shows, recruiting sports tournaments and events, and other projects designed to further develop and promote Greenville-Pitt County as a sports destination.
“Paul has already played a major role in our success this past year,” stated Gray Workman Williams, Director of Sports Development for the Greenville-Pitt County CVB. “I am thrilled to grow our team and for the future development of our sports tourism industry in Pitt County.”
Sheehan previously interned with the Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau during the Fall 2017 semester before being hired as a part-time Sports Sales Assistant in January. Before joining the Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Sheehan earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Business from Appalachian State University, and worked in the Career and Advising Center at the East Carolina University College of Business, the security department at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, and for a regional concert series in Richmond, Virginia.
"I am beyond excited to begin my professional career here in Greenville. The growth this city has experienced in the past two years alone makes me extremely excited for what the future holds,” stated Sheehan. “This city has become a great place for a young professional to not only work, but live as well."
