PCS names Principal of the Year

Darryl Thomas, of E.B. Aycock Middle, and Kirby Mannes, of Ridgewood Elementary, named Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year

GREENVILLE, NC — Pitt County Schools Announced the 2020 Principal of the Year, Mr. Darryl Thomas, of E.B. Aycock Middle School at a celebration at Rock Springs Center, on Thursday, October 15, 2020.  Mr. Kirby Maness, of J.H. Rose High School, was named Assistant Principal of the Year.

Mr. Thomas has been Principal of E.B. Aycock for five years and has 16 years in education. A graduate of East Carolina University, Thomas received his Master of School Administration degree in 2012.  He is currently projected to receive his Doctoral of Education degree in 2021, also from ECU.

"Pitt County Schools is loaded with talented school administrators," says Dr. Ethan Lenker, PCS Superintendent, "and to be named Pitt County Schools Principal of the Year is a great accomplishment.  Mr. Thomas is an instructional leader who knows how to bring in his community partners. His community involvement programs are excellent. Darryl will represent Pitt County a the highest level in the regional competition."

Mr. Maness has served as an Assistant Principal for three years, both at J.H. Rose High School and currently Ridgewood Elementary.  Maness holds two Masters degrees, a Master of Education in Instructional System Technology from UNC-Charlotte and a Master of School Administration from East Carolina University, earned in 2016. He has been an educator for 14 years.

"Mr. Maness has spent several years in leadership positions at JH Rose," says Superintendent Dr. Ethan Lenker, "and I challenged him this year to expand his skills at Ridgewood Elementary, where he hasn’t disappointed!  His role in our AP Leadership Academy has shown that he is growing as a school administrator and has become a true leader for Pitt County Schools."

Both Thomas and Maness received plaques and other gifts from gracious donors during Thursday evening's event, sponsored by Pitt County Farm Bureau.
