Chief Thomas Appoints David Anderson as Greenville’s Next Deputy Chief

18 SEP

GREENVILLE, N.C. (September 18, 2026) — Chief K.Z. Thomas has named longtime Greenville Police Department leader David Anderson as the department's new Deputy Chief. Anderson brings nearly three decades of law enforcement experience to the role, including more than 20 years with GPD.

"Deputy Chief Anderson has led in nearly every corner of this organization, is highly respected by the men and women of this department, and understands this city and the people we serve," said Chief K.Z. Thomas. “I trust his judgement and know he will be a tremendous asset to our leadership team.”

Anderson most recently served as the Patrol Bureau Commander, overseeing 24-hour patrol operations throughout the city. His previous assignments include Special Operations Bureau Commander, West Zone Commander, and Emergency Response Team Commander.

"I am truly honored by the opportunity to serve as Deputy Chief," said Anderson. “Greenville is my home, and this department has been a significant part of my life for more than two decades. I've had the privilege of working alongside some incredible people and serving a community that means a great deal to me and my family. I'm grateful for Chief Thomas' confidence in me and I'm excited for the opportunity to help lead this department into its next chapter.”

Throughout his career, Anderson has been heavily involved in law enforcement training, policy development, use-of-force review, and leadership development. He has provided instruction and presentations to officers, trainers, investigators, supervisors, and executive leaders throughout North Carolina.

Since 2018, Anderson has served as a part-time instructor at East Carolina University, teaching courses in criminal procedure, leadership, management, supervision, and other criminal justice topics. He earned both his Bachelor of Science and his Master of Science degrees in Criminal Justice from ECU. His professional education also includes the FBI-LEEDA Command Leadership Institute and Executive Leadership Institute, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Leadership in Police Organizations program, and National Tactical Officers Association SWAT Commander programs.

A native of Goldsboro, Anderson moved to Greenville in 1992 and has called it home ever since. He and his wife have raised their family in the Greenville Community.
