GREENVILLE, NC – Visit Greenville, NC (Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau) has selected Convention Sports & Leisure International (CSL International) to conduct a sports complex development feasibility study and strategic plan for further sports development in Greenville and Pitt County.

“Sports tourism is the fastest growing tourism market segment in the United States,” states Andrew Schmidt, Executive Director of the Greenville-Pitt County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Our sports marketing efforts have proved successful at the local level as an estimated $6 million dollars was generated into our local economy during the last fiscal year. The biggest challenge we face in our sports tourism efforts is finding enough athletic facilities to accommodate the demand we are seeing from tournament organizers."

Visit Greenville, NC ramped up its sports development and recruitment efforts over the last year and a half as the national sports tourism market continues to grow rapidly. In April 2015, Visit Greenville, NC hired Gray Workman Williams as its first full-time Sports Sales Manager to actively promote our area facilities, and recruit a wider variety of sporting events to come to Greenville-Pitt County. “This study is necessary to discover Pitt County’s need for more sports facility development to attract larger events and tournaments to take Greenville to the next level as a sports destination,” states Gray Workman Williams, Sports Sales Manager for Visit Greenville, NC. “Attracting more of these large tournaments will create an even greater economic impact on our community, and we are excited to work with CSL International and grow sports tourism in Pitt County.”

Founded in 1988, CSL International is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and offers a team of highly-trained consultants who have conducted over 1,000 feasibility and planning studies for sports, recreation, and event teams and facilities in various sized communities across the country. CSL International is familiar with the relevant local, regional, and state issues, having recently performed an extensive number of planning studies throughout North Carolina, including East Carolina University’s Dowdy-Ficklen Renovation in Greenville, New Bern, Wilmington, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Cabarrus County, and other several other cities and counties.

“We are very excited about working with Visit Greenville, NC and the Greenville community on this important study planning for the future of sports tourism in the Greenville market,” stated Joel Feldman, Senior Project Manager for CSL International. “We look forward to working with local sports organizations and community stakeholders to focus on ways to add to the overall level of events, attendees and economic impact, while improving the quality/availability of facilities for existing local sports and recreation program participants.”

CSL International expects to complete the scope of services for the Greenville-Pitt County sports complex feasibility study by the end of 2016, and provide Visit Greenville, NC with a final report summarizing all relevant findings, conclusions, and recommendations, and make themselves available for presentations to community stakeholders. Visit Greenville, NC will then work with city and county partners to begin evaluating and implementing deliverables from the study to help further develop Greenville-Pitt County into a premiere sports tourism destination in North Carolina.
