The Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce Teen Leadership Institute (TLI) is a program designed to educate through experience and motivate young leaders to take an active role in their community.  Through education, networking, peer interaction, problem solving and project cooperation, the TLI helps prepare students for constructive and responsible involvement in community affairs, while also thinking seriously about their career pathways.  Since its inception in 1988, over 900 Pitt County High School students have graduated from the program.

"My son participated in the Chamber's Teen Leadership program.  He came home charged up after each meeting and found the experience to be amazingly interesting and fun.  Most importantly, when he began interviewing for college he was asked in every interview to share his experience with the Chamber's Teen Leadership program.  This program got the attention of colleges and strengthened Nolan's credentials.  Thank you to everyone who put time and energy into developing this program and our community's future leaders!"

The TLI program runs from November through May, culminating with a graduation ceremony in May.  The program consists of an orientation (November) and (5) five day sessions where students will be excused from school to visit and hear from various leaders in the community.  Students are required to present a final project during the program's final session in May.  The project will be outlined in greater detail during the program's first session.  Each program day has a particular theme and will run from 8:30 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.

There will not be a session during the month of January due to testing and the month of March will be used to make-up any session that needs to be rescheduled due to inclement weather.

  • Acquire a network of youth leaders in Greenville-Pitt County, which can form an excellent basis for their success in the work and college world
  • To prepare and allow students to participate in the group process
  • Gain an awareness of the need for community service, civic participation, and goodwill
  • Increase familiarity with areas in Greenville-Pitt County beyond their immediate neighborhood and school
  • To encourage participants to undertake leadership roles to improve their own environment

All applicants must:

  • Attend a Pitt County High School (Public/Private/Homeschool)
  • Be a rising sophomore or junior
  • Be in good academic standing and have no attendance or disciplinary problems at their school
  • Not have already participated in the program
  • Complete the required application in its entirety
  • Five (5) students from each school are selected to participate
  • Participants will be selected by the TLI Advisory Council based upon information in their written application, academic achievements and responsibilities, active participation in school functions or membership in other organizations
  • Applicants must have their applications turned in by the due date of October 13th, 2017 in order to be considered for participation

Students interested in applying for the Teen Leadership Institute can download the program application or pick one up from their student counselor.  The application must be completed in its entirety and returned to the Chamber of Commerce (via mail, email or in person) by the due date listed.  Students selected to participate will receive notification of his/her selection via e-mail.
