L to R: Leigh Buckhout (Winterville Police Department) and Donnie Hardee (Greenville Fire-Rescue)

GREENVILLE, NC - Fire-Rescue and Law Enforcement personnel, representing agencies across Greenville and Pitt County, were honored on Thursday, June 7, 2016 at the Fire-Rescue & Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner at the Holiday Inn Greenville.  The event, hosted by the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce and City of Greenville, honors law enforcement officers and Fire/Rescue professionals in the community for their commitment and dedication to making Greenville and Pitt County a safe place to live and do business.  DSM Dyneema was the presenting sponsor of this year’s event.

Highlighting the dinner each and every year is the recognition of the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year and the Fire-Rescue Employee of the Year.  WNCT 9 On Your Side weekend evening anchor Katie Harden presented this year’s prestigious awards to Officer Leigh Buckhout (Winterville Police Department) and EMS Specialist Donnie Hardee (Greenville Fire-Rescue).  Buckhout and Hardee were among a number of individuals nominated for the awards.

Buckhout began basic law enforcement training in 2012 and has been a member of the Winterville Police Department since 2013.  Prior to graduating from East Carolina University in 2011, he spent four years in the U.S. Marine Corps.  Hardee is a veteran Fire-Rescue employee, having served for more than 20 years.  As a leader in the Greenville-Fire Rescue Fire Prevention Program, he educates thousands of children on the significance of fire safety on a yearly basis.  Both Hardee and Buckhout were given a recognition plaque and a Citizen watch (courtesy of Robinson Jewelers - Greenville).

The event also recognized two longstanding members of the Chamber’s Community Safety Committee, Randy Nichols and John Minges.  Both Nichols and Minges volunteer their time each year to ensure that local law enforcement and Fire-Rescue personnel are adequately honored for their devotion to public safety.  A number of local business and organizations contributed door prizes toward the event, which were given away throughout the night.
