Pat Dunn (L) accepts the 2011 Citizen of the Year Award from past winner Daneel le Roux.

The Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce presented Pat Dunn, former Mayor of Greenville, with the 2011 Citizen of the Year award during its Annual Membership Gala on January 26.

According to one of her nominators, “Pat Dunn is a remarkable community leader, public servant and selfless human being.  She has done so very much for this city and for hundreds – probably thousands – of individuals and families.  And because her contributions derive from an authentic and pure desire to serve and not from any need or desire for public acknowledgement, people will never know but a tiny percentage of what she has done.”

Dunn, who received the award in front of a crowd of about 300 people, has a long list of service over many years.  More recently, Dunn’s community service list with local non-profits is extensive, including the Eastern N.C. Substance Abuse Council Board, the Salvation Army Board, the Lifelong Learning Board, the STRIVE Board and more.  In addition to board service, she is very often seen as a sponsor of events for non-profits such as the STRIVE gala, the annual Community Unity Breakfast and the Teen Leadership program.

Topping the list in recent years has been tireless service as an elected official, where she will be remembered as never self-serving and always driven by the question “what is in the best interest of Greenville?”

“I never saw her do or say anything – I never saw her take any action or contemplate any move – that was motivated for her own self-interest,” said another one of her nominators.  “She always, always, insisted to me that we determine what is best for Greenville and move in that direction.”

Dunn holds B.S., M.S., M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees from East Carolina University, University of Tennessee, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and The Ohio State University, respectively.  She began her career at Pearce College as a professor of Health and Physical Education.  She later became the assistant Dean of Students at Montreat-Anderson College.  Following her position as Assistant Dean of Women at Madison College, she spent more than 30 years as a professor of Health Education at ECU.  Dunn was elected to the Greenville City Council in 2001 and served as Mayor of Greenville from 2007 to 2011.
