Our reasons for an increasing rate of growth in manufacturing employment is due to many factors: 1) construction of new water and wastewater treatment systems in Greenville in the mid-1980's which removed us from a moratorium on additional industrial wastewater and provides plenty of excess capacity for future growth, 2) the construction of new US 264 providing four-lane highway access to the Interstate Highway System, 3) expansion of Pitt-Greenville Airport, 4) the establishment of the Pitt County Industrial Building Program (a $1 million fund to be used to construct speculative buildings for new industry), and 5) an expanded marketing program and budget initiated by the Development Commission.

We anticipate future manufacturing employment growth primarily in the following categories: chemicals/pharmaceutical (SIC 28), printing and publishing (SIC 27), lumber and wood products (SIC 24), medical products (SIC 38), rubber and plastic products (SIC 30), and various metal products (SIC's 34, 35 & 37).

The County's average weekly manufacturing wage was $366.82 in 1986 and is estimated to be $440.75 in 1989 and $497.10 in 1991. This figure includes all salaried as well as hourly wage earners. Pitt County is currently slightly above the statewide average manufacturing wage, partly due to the number of companies that have corporate or divisional headquarters here. On average, the estimate of the entry-level wage is $5.50 per hour for an unskilled worker, $7.00 per hour for a semi-skilled worker, and $9.00 per hour for a skilled worker.
