The Teen Leadership Institute is a program to help high school students learn how to best serve their community; to get out of the classroom and into real world situations with other students from area high schools in an environment that allows them to share new ideas; to spend time with professionals who are focused on their needs and concerns and who listen and respond; and to get a step ahead of the challenges they will face after high school.

Five (5) students from each of the six high schools and five (5) students from private and home schools that meet the criteria are selected through an application process to be participants in the Institute.  Students in grades 10 and 11 may submit an application to their high school counselor.  Private and home school students may submit applications to the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce.  All applicants are notified of the selection committees’ final decisions.

The Teen Leadership Institute committee works very closely with Frances Young and the school counselors on the scheduling to avoid conflicts with major school events, testing, etc.  This program is sponsored by the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce and supported by area businesses/individuals that are Chamber members.

The students participate in five all-day sessions focusing on leadership and communication, government and legal services, interview skills, and college and career exploration.  One session is devoted to a “hands on” community service project.

Teen Leadership was established in 1988.  Over 450 students have graduated from the Institute in the past 20 years.
