GFWC-NC HONORS WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT
Atlantic Beach, NC – The General Federation of Women’s Clubs of North Carolina Inc. (GFWC-NC) will honor 18 outstanding women for their significant contributions to the state of North Carolina. These women are pioneers in their professional and community efforts serving as role models for future generations. The Women of Achievement (WOA) award winners are some of our best and brightest leaders in government, business, and nonprofits in the state. Each honoree boasts a career defined by hard work and a commitment to helping others. They have taught us that service is not a duty, but a privilege, and a part of living life to the fullest.
On Wednesday evening, May 11th, the annual WOA Banquet will honor 18 women from throughout North Carolina. Dr. June Atkinson, North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction, will be the keynote speaker during the event. In recognition of the 10th anniversary of this event a reception prior to the banquet was held at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium.
The 2011 Women of Achievement honorees are:

- Betsy Bennett, Director of the NC Museum of Science
- Catherine Chew, Craven County Community College, President
- Alice Copes, Community leader, teacher, volunteer, clubwoman and founder of Beaufort Chanteymen
- Patricia Dunn, Mayor of Greenville
- Dr. Melissa Essary, Dean of the Campbell University Law School
- Honorable Janice Faulkner, Former NC Sec. of State, Sec. of Revenue, Commissioner of the DMV, and East Carolina University Professor

The WOA awards were first given by GFWC-NC in 2002. Recipients are nominated and selected by a committee and must be from or currently residing in North Carolina. GFWC-NC is a nonprofit organization comprised of approximately 5,000 members across North Carolina who are committed to making their communities, the state, and nation a better place to live and work.
