The Chamber
Legends Award Recipient - The late Les Garner

The Legends Award  is described as a very special honor to be given on occasion at the Annual Membership Celebration.  It is not necessarily presented every year, but only when deemed appropriate.  The honor is designed to recognize a person for exemplary contributions to the betterment of Greenville-Pitt County and over a continuous period of time.

Nominations are not requested for the Legends Award.  The Citizen of the Year awards committee may bestow the Legends Award if one of the nominees stands out as having made exemplary or exceptional contributions to the community over a sustained period of time.  The committee may also choose someone who stands out but who has not been nominated for an award on paper.  Unsolicited nominations on paper can be considered as well.  The award may be presented to living persons or may be presented posthumously.

With the Citizen of the Year award, usually there are significant accomplishments which have occurred during the past 1-3 years.  The Legends Award differs in that the recipients are citizens whose service to the community has been so significant in civic, economic, political, educational and/or religious activities over a sustained period of time that the history of Pitt County could not be written without their inclusion.

2007 - Walter Williams

2008 - Leslie "Les" Garner, Sr.

2011 - Eddie Smith
